After the successful NCAA program was dropped in 1980, the present edition of the UConn wrestling team was formed by a group of students led by Mike Gorton, Pat Neilan and Wil Anctil.  Soon afterwards, Coach Bartel was brought on board and the team immediately began competition for a Regional, Dual Meet and National Championship in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA). The NCWA was created in 1998 to fill the gap in today's wrestling community by restoring some lost NCAA programs.  Based in Dallas, TX, the NCWA is committed to a vision that has increased the athletic opportunities for both Men & Women and is hoping to provide a spawning  ground for new wrestling programs nation wide.
